Final Action Research Plan
After lots of thought and many discussions with others on campus, I finally came up with my final Action Research Plan. I will set up a
mentor program where staff members are assigned one student to be paired up
with. We will have five big meetings throughout the year. (Back to school,
Halloween, Winter, Valentines, and End of year celebration) At these meetings,
mentors and students will do a craft or activity, enjoy a snack, and catch up.
Mentors will also be expected to check in on their mentees once every week. This
can be done through a note, stopping by at their lunch break, or making a quick
stop by their classroom to see how their day is going. I will rely greatly on
teacher recommendations for students who are in need of this program. I will ask
teachers, the counselor, and other people on the leadership team to nominate
students who they feel would benefit from the program. Students with low self
esteem will benefit the most with a mentor. I will create a questionnaire in the
beginning of the year for students to evaluate how they view themselves in
school. They will also answer the same questions at the end of the year. I will
use these results to see if their self esteem and views of themselves increase
throughout the school year.

What a great plan. I look forward to following your research. I love the idea of the acivity/craft meetings througout the year. What age group will you be workign with?
ReplyDeleteI love this idea. I have seen a model like this be successful at my former school - the students were chose based on data recieved from their previous year's TAKS/STAAR test. How are you going to pair the mentor and the student? And will the mentors be teachers at your school?
ReplyDeleteYour plan's looking great! I look forward to following and learning more about your research!
ReplyDeleteSounds great. I think mentors can be a positive thing. Using teachers as mentors can be effective too because the students then get to see their teacher in a different light. I'm curious to see what grades your are working with. I'm thinking its younger grades, due to the parties and crafts. I know students also like having one on one time through luncheons, especially the older ones. I'm excited to see your results. Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteA back to school gathering sounds like fun! Mentoring is such a positive motivation strategy for students and even teachers sometimes. You'd be surprised as to how a teacher can see through the eyes of a child. I believe that when we can relate somewhat to our students as much as possible then a bond is created.
ReplyDeleteI had another thought. Would it make sense for the recommending teacher to be the mentor? They would have already built an educational relationship. A 3rd grade teacher could recommend a student from this year and she will mentor them during their 4th grade year? Does that make sense?
ReplyDeleteYour plan looks great!!! How will you determine which teachers are mentors?
ReplyDeleteGood plan. I am with Robyn though, unfortunately not all will want be a mentor and determining them may be challenging if some in fact don't want to. Shouldn't be a major problem though. I think it looks very good.
